FIXED MY TACHOMETER!! And all I did was pull out the gauge cluster from the dashboard, pull out the tachometer gauge itself, shake it around, and it was no longer stuck! Yay for me!! ^_^

Also, haven’t seen one of these gifs in a long time, so here!!

Those older Tachs seem to have issues with getting stuck. One time in my Dads Merkur the tach got stuck at about 1200 rpm. Smack the dash and it went back to normal.

Cool! But I’m a little worried about it getting stuck again just as easily...

BTW, tell everybody how easy it was to fix your no-start issue!

Then I’ll get a rubber mallet!

And not to worry! That’ll come soon enough. :p

The tach in my ‘84 sticks on almost every start-up. i just give the dash a light tap above the tach and it bounces to life. It’s done this ever since I bought the car. It sat, very neglected, for close to 6 years when I picked it up.

Watching the fuel mileage gauge leaves me very confused. How are you getting 30MPG while stopped at idle? How does it work in a 80s car with a mechanical Odo? What is it actually measuring?

Well, I guess you... (insert witty comment about expensive exotic car mechanics here)... sorry, I lost what I was going to say.

Good job on fixing it.

Thank you kindly. ;)

It’s vacuum-operated and moves based on throttle input as well. Other than that, no idea how that witchcraft works!

So it’s effectively a measure of how much has is going into the engine regardless of speed.

I was thinking about this, too. My best answer is, it’s actually a G/H gauge, and they put a “MPG” readout on there for “stupid” Americans... If it only had the G/H portion, it would make sense. But many people don’t understand what G/H means.

YES!!!

Most important gauge of them all!

I’m not even sure what G/H means. What is it?

Fuel consumption in gallons (G) per hour (H).

Oh... derp. Should have figured that out. That’s really common on boats, but Idon’t think I’ve ever seen a car with that, at least not labeled as such.

G/H could be useful, though, if you could tie it back into the speedo to know how fast you were going. Otherwise my guess is this is really a vacuum gauge relabeled. While not perfect, vacuum is usually a pretty good indication of fuel consumption.

Looking back, I actually should have labeled it as gal/hr. But on the Porsche it looks like it’s “G/h” right there by the MPG label. Making the gauge even more laughably useless. Except that it must be a vacuum gauge.

My GTO is the only car I know with a gal/hr gauge from the factory. When sitting stopped, the economy gauge switches from mpg (or L/100km) to gal/hr (or L/hr?). There’s also a hidden menu that has the option of displaying gal/hr while you’re driving. It’s another one of those little things (like trip odometers that go to the 100th) that is unique and awesome about that car...

Hmm, didn’t spend enough time looking at the picture, but you are correct sir, it does appear to say G/H above the MPG. Confusing. Maybe like your GTO, it’s both, but through some sort of German electromechanical wizardry.

GTOs are cool cars. My brother in law had one and I got to drive it a few times and really liked it.
